ADHD/Autism Referrals

Referrals for Adults

ADHD

We can refer adults for suspected ADHD. There are very specific pieces of information which we need to include with the referral. The secretaries can go through what information is needed for the referral.

Autism

Adults (OVER 18) can self-refer for an NHS autism assessment via Autism Service Norfolk. You do not need a GP appointment to access this service and the details on how to refer are outlined on their website. Autism Service Norfolk | NCH&C

It does mention that if you self-refer you should inform your GP. You can do this by speaking to one of our administration team or using our online consultation tool via our website.

NHS Right to Choose Pathway

Right to Choose provides you the option of asking for a referral to a particular provider of your choice for assessment.

Please note that you will need to investigate and decide which provider you would like us to refer to, we cannot recommend providers to you.  The Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care Board (ICB) have approved the following providers:

The Owl Centre (ADHD) https://www.theowl.org

Skylight Psychiatry (ADHD or Autism) https://www.skylightpsychiatry.co.uk/

ADHD Net (ADHD) https://adhdnet.co.uk/

CARE – Centre of ADHD Research & Excellence https://adhdandautism.org/

We recommend asking for one of the above options due to if medications are required, our practice policy is that these are the only providers currently approved from which the GP surgery might be able to continue the prescriptions.

Once you have chosen a provider, please visit their website and ensure you have completed all the referral information.  Once done, please contact the medical secretaries who will send the documentation to the chosen provider.

Please note that if following an assessment medication is prescribed, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to provide this medication.

Referral for Children (up to age 18)

If your child is 5 years of age and attends school, the school should be referring the child rather than the GP.

A referral pathway has been created which allows schools to refer directly for ADHD and/or autism assessments. This change recognises that schools are better placed to gather the necessary information and refer rather than the GP.

Please see this website which goes through the referral process. https://www.norfolkcommunityhealthandcare.nhs.uk/post-5-years-assessment-team

If needed please pass this information onto school so they can read the content and refer you on.

If your child is under 5 years of age and is either home schooled or does not attend school at all, referrals need to come via the GP so please contact the surgery direct.

What if my child is younger than 5 years old?

All children under the age of 5 will need to be seen by the Community Paediatrics Team first. Following the appointment with the Community Paediatric Team if they feel it is appropriate then will then refer you to the Neurodevelopmental Service (NDS) for further assessment. This is to ensure a thorough medical assessment is completed and available to NDS staff when they meet with you.

Support whilst you are waiting for your assessment can be sourced from Neurodevelopmental Services and Resources for Children in Norfolk | NCH&C or https://www.justonenorfolk.nhs.uk/nd-digital-library/

A referral to the Community Paediatrics Team can be made by your child’s GP, Health Visitor, Speech and Language Therapist, or School Nurse.
